Welcome to Mon State

Mon State of Myanmar is the westernmost part of the East-West Economic Corridor and it is the exit point to Andaman Sea for EWEC countries. It is one of 14 states and regions of Myanmar and it has an area of 4,748 square miles. Even though there is no exact figure on population available, it is estimated that the population of the state is between 2,000,000 to 4,000,000. Main languages spoken in the area are Mon, Bamar and Karen. Its capital is Mawlamyine, also spelled Mawlamyaing or Moulmein, which is on the western coast of the state and it is the third largest city in the country. Other major cities in the state are Thaton which in the north of Mawlamyine and Ye, southern city of the state.

Demographic Profile

Mawlamyine is the capital city of Mon State and it is the third largest city in the country. Among over of city’s population 246,600, majority of them is Mon, while the second largest is Bamar, and there are also other ethnic nationalities such as Karen. Thanlwin Bridge which connects Yangon and Mawlamyine from Mottama is the longest bridge in the country. It was completed in 2004 and 3 km long. The main business of Mawlamyine city is rubber plantation. Mawlamyine Industrial Zone has been manufacturing agricultural implements, motorcars, small electricity generators, and other functional machines and tools.

Economic Zone

Mawlamyine Industrial Zone is about 2 miles in the east of the city and it is 18th Industrial Zone of the country. Currently there are over 50 factories including rubber factories, sugar mills, auto manufacturing, seafood processing factories and others in the zone.

Investment Opportunities

Mon State is the top producer of rubber in the country and it is the major secondary agriculture product. Rubber plantations can be found in many parts of the state, especially in the mountainous areas. In Mudon township, near Mawlamyaing, there is an applied research center for agricultural science with laboratory bases in rubber plantation and fertilization of some other species. Thaton, north of Mawlamyine, has a major factory of rubber products run by Ministry of Industry No. 1.

Seafood Industry

Another major business sector of Mon State is production of different kinds of seafoods, such as sea-fish and salt. Myanmar Coastal fishing is considered to be an important enterprise of the state. Villages on Bilu Island, in Thanbyuzayat, Ye and Kyaikkami townships are engaged in producing dried fish and fish sauce. Agar-agar is produced from sea algae at Marine Science Department at Setse. Salt is produced from saltems in Ye Township and Htantabinchaung in Paung Township. Seafood products are distributed to different parts of the country and exported to other countries including Thailand.

Other Industries

Other than agriculture and seafood industry, Mon State also has manufacturing industry including paper mills, sugar mills, rubber related factories such as hot water bottles, rubber balloons, plaster figurines and rubber tires. Extracted minerals such as salt and antimony and granite are also processed by some factories to be distributed in the country.

Macro Economic Indicators Agriculture

Mon State has an estimated cultivated land of nearly 4.5 million acres, and its main major business sector is agriculture and the main product is paddy/rice. Other agriculture products include corn, groundnut, pulses, rubber, sugar-cane, coconut, betel nut, dhani, durian, rambutan and mangos tee, sunflower, beans and pulses, tapioca, oil palm, coccoa, condiments, cashew, nipa palm and other fruits such as mangos teen, rumbutan, pineapple, citrus fruits, avocado.

Natural Resources

The main natural resources are forest products, and onshore and offshore mineral resources. The major business sectors of the state are agriculture and seafood industry, while there is potential for tourism in the near future.

Opportunities in Tourism

The improved transportation between Mawlamyine and other Myanmar’s major cities such as Yangon and Mandalay will facilitate development of tourism in the state in the near future. Mawlamyine also has transportation routes such as train, sea line and airlines. Thanlwin Bridge, the longest bridge in the country has significantly shortened the travel time between southern Mon State cities and Yangon. After upgrade of road between Mawlamyine and Myawaddy, the border city opposite Mae Sot of Thailand, Mon State can also be a potential for foreign tourists in the future.
